Festival Director's jottings on the 2008 Festival The Sixteenth Penwortham Youth Music Festival Tuesday 4th to Sunday 9th March 2008 Well, what a wonderful music festival we have had once again. It can be quite exhausting but nevertheless very rewarding and fun. To be able to listen to hundreds of talented children perform, is worth shouting about. We had two schools performing for the first time this year; Penwortham Girls’ High School Choir and The Coppice, Bamber Bridge Choir. This year at the suggestion of St. Leonard’s Gilbert and Sullivan Group we introduced a Gilbert and Sullivan class to encourage more young people to sing this wonderful music. Although we only had two entrants, the young participants were extremely good and provided a nice contrast to the other songs sung inasmuch they were able to act and dress as the character from the opera. We hope music teachers will consider this class for their pupils next year. The year 2012 sounds a long time off. Think about it as only four years away and it doesn’t sound that long away! The year of course is the next Preston Guild, and the Harris Charity is already in discussions about staging the Young Musician of Preston Guild. This will include competitions for Brass, Woodwind, Strings and Pianoforte. There will also be competitions for High School Choirs and Primary School Choirs. The winners will join the instrumentalists in the Grand Final to be held in the Guild Hall. Competitors will need to be under 18 years and have attained Grade 6 in examinations. So if you are under 14 years of age now, keep practising hard and continue to enter Festivals and hope that success comes your way. I was particularly pleased with the pianoforte classes this year. The standard is certainly improving. This year we were able to present a separate trophy for the best pianoforte performance. On behalf of the Committee, may I thank our Adjudicators, Stewards and Teachers for giving of their time for the benefit of the young musicians. Thank you also to Penwortham Town Council and the Harris Charity for their generous sponsorship. Philip Walsh Festival Director RESULTS CLASS 1.
